The only thing that comes to mind with my backgound is if the identity disk volume id was changed. Why the issue only manifested in the latest release of the tools and having an older version still worked, I don't know, but updating the controllers fixed it. You may be prompted to remove XenServer tools as they may list as still being installed, if this is the case simply select to remove the tools prior to proceeding.

Xenservre turns out it was not the tools at all, it was an issue where, for some reason, my controllers were not prepping the MCS image properly. Apologies for the inconvenience. At this point I cancelled the installation as it was clearly not working and submitted a support ticket to Citrix, who advised on the following. Follow the driver setup wizard, which should be quite easy to follow. Strange thing is on the other identical VM, it showed "detected new devices" bubble in the tray and it found the Xen ethernet adaptor. My guess is the mismatch is causing a drive redetection.
XenServer Tools Removed by Windows Update
